About the Instructor

     My name is scott chapman and i celebrated my 12 year Fencing Anniversary on April 1st, 2009.

Fencing and Swordplay History

     My Instructors credentials are issued by the United States Fencing Association (USFA), which i earned by attending the USFA National Coaching Program at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. My expertise was learned and earned first and foremost, under the tutelage of Master Eric McDonald, Level IV Foil Instructor and currently Head Coach of Highlanders Fencing Club and the Cal Poly Fencing Club. Also, Masters: Alex Beguinet, Gary Copeland, Zoila Palacio, Sara Solomon, Ed Richards, Michael Marx, and every Fencer i've had the pleasure of engaging in steel. My credentials also include: Associate Member in the United States Fencing Coaches Association; Sports First Aid; CPR and AED Training; and the American Sports Educators Program (ASEP)—which is required to teach sports in the Public Schools system.

     Period Swordplay, Weapons and Martial Training was learned and developed under the tutelage of Gregory Hoffman of Duelling Arts International, in: Unarmed Combat; Smallsword; Rapier and: Rapier (Case of Rapiers) Dagger, Free-hand, Cloak, Chain, Lantern; Longsword: single hand, hand-and-a half, and Claymore; and Quarterstaff. Member of: The Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD); Renaissance Faire Sword and Fencing Guild. Numerous Exhibitions, Demonstrations, and Hisorical Presentations on the Sword for Schools, Civic Groups, and other organizatons.

     i've undergone and passed several Department of Justice background investigations for my work with Public Recreation Departments and with at-risk youth and juvenile offenders.

Current Work and Activities

     My current work includes: Owner and Head Fencing Instructeur of Salle des Fers Fencing Club offering Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Classical and Competitive Fencing Instruction in all three modern fencing weapons; Fight Choreographer for Stage and Theatre; Construction--scott chapman Labours Home Repair and Maintenance, performing all types and phases of construction; Classical Music vocalist and singer: Bass Section Leader--Cuesta Master Chorale.

Life Skills and History

     The skills and experiences i bring are: sales; landscape and maintenance; "sanitation engineer"--janitorial work; restaurant worker; commercial sea urchin diver and commercial fishing deckhand; Brightwork and repair of marine vessels; heavy-equipment operator; car audio system installer; solar energy system installer; General Manager of SkyHeart Natural Foods Store, Member/Manager and Member of the Board of Directors of the Questa Natural Foods Coop; organic produce sales; a general knowledge of Herbal Medicine; SLO Homeless Shelter Facilities Coordinator and Shelter Worker; world travel from Norway to the Rock of Gibraltar, The United? Kindom to Moscow, harvesting cotton and constructiong Schools in Central America--one of three Americas; "busking"--a street musician from the UK to Norway to the Rock of Gibraltar; bicycle repair person; donut baker; government messenger with a secret security clearence (i can keep a secret); political, social and anti-nuclear activist; frisbee enthusiast; vegetarian; i'm a bachelor--single with no ex-wife or children; play some guitar and piano; Professional chorister, soloist and bass section leader--First Presbyterian Church of SLO; vocalist with: Cuesta Master Chorale, Mozart Festival, Pacific Repertory Opera, Xindigo, Cal Arts Community Chorus, Ventura Master Chorale and Opera Association, Ventura College Chorale, Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble, Actor/Singer in numerous Opera and Musical-Comedy stage productions--the last being The Three-and-a-Half Musketeers; a philosophical bent (philosophy will make anyone a little bent); Associate in Arts degrees in General Education, Business Administration and Business Management; speak Spanish; Membership and Supporter in: the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Little League, VYBA Basketball, MYF Youth Fellowship, Acolyte—alter boy—in the First Methodist Church, Big Brothers of Ventura County, Order of Demolay, Children of the American Revolution (CAR), NRA, several Tibetan Buddhist Retreat Centers, the American Civil Liberties Union, Sierra Club, ECOSLO, Center for Biological Diversity, Natural Resources Defense Council, Earth First!, The Save the Redwoods Society, Avaaz, the Green Party, the Democratic Party, even the Republican Party (i wanted to see what kind of stuff they'd send me—keep your friends close, your adversaries closer); and a fun guy a lot of the time.

     There. i've probably left a few things out, but there are occaisional blanks in all our lives that need filling in. This is probably a lot more than you really wanted to know, but when it comes to those you entrust to teach your children, choose wisely, for your children are influenced by all they meet, especially their TEACHERS, of whom, aren't we all.
